ROBLOX now allows creators to sell limited quantity digital items exclusively available in their online marketplace. This means that creators can craft a few unique digital items for their avatars, making them more valuable to users. Users can also resell these items, with the original creator getting a 10% cut from each sale. Previously, users could already create and sell digital items in their store, also known as user-generated content (UGC). However, Limiteds are exclusive to the platform and can only be paid for with in-game currency, the Robux, which can be acquired through real money. To sell these Limiteds, creators need to apply and pay a fee to avoid saturating the market with low-quality items.

The Limiteds are not blockchain-based, unlike NFTs. Since they are entirely associated with Roblox, the company requires creators to apply and pay a fee to sell their limited items. Some creators have already started to post their limited items for sale on Roblox’s Avatar Shop, such as a potato with a crown or a UFO sunhat. The items can be purchased for a minimum of 120 Robux, equivalent to around $1.50 in real-world money.

Although this is not Roblox’s first time selling limited-time items, the influx of unique items may attract young users to overspend, particularly if their parents haven’t set any spending limits. Also, creators who successfully sell their items make a considerable profit that could encourage poor spending habits.

The idea of limited-time digital gear is becoming more prevalent in online games like Roblox and Fortnite. In Fortnite’s case, they regularly release new in-game outfits that are only available for a limited time. However, there are an infinite number of those outfits for purchase. In contrast, Roblox creators craft unique limited items and introduce them to the marketplace’s economy.

The company takes a 10% cut from each sale, which may incentivize creators to make more unique digital items.
