BUNGIE REVIVES MARATHON TO CREATE NEW PVP EXTRACTION GAME
Gamers have been buzzing with excitement since Bungie, creator of popular game franchises Destiny and Halo, announced their latest project – a Player versus Player extraction game set in the world of their old IP, Marathon. Though still in development for PC, Xbox Series S/X, and PS5, Bungie promises that the new game will be a riveting sci-fi experience, complete with cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners, evolving zones, and vigorous anti-cheat measures.
MARATHON: A TRIBUTE TO THE ORIGINAL
Despite not being a direct sequel to the original Marathon, the new game will pay tribute to its predecessor’s mythology, story, and themes. It will feature references and easter eggs for fans of the classic first-person shooter game, which debuted on Mac in 1994.
BUNGIE IMMERSING PLAYERS IN THE MARATHON UNIVERSE
For this new game, Bungie aims to experiment with new ways of immersing players in the Marathon universe. In his blog post, Marathon game director Christopher Barrett said, “The original Marathon games revealed story moments through terminals, all in text. But now we have so many more ways to immerse players in this world, both in and out of game. We’ll be carrying that through in the design of this game.” This suggests that players can expect an engaging and interactive narrative experience.
PERSISTENT AND EVOLVING ZONES
Bungie is creating a gaming experience where players can compete for survival, riches, and renown in a world of evolving, persistent zones. The game’s sci-fi universe is set in 2850, with clone technology that includes synthetic bodies and conscious shifting abilities. The brief teaser trailer shows players wearing full-body armor and wielding an array of weapons, typical of PvP extraction games.
DEDICATED SERVERS AND VIGOROUS ANTI-CHEAT MEASURES
Barrett also confirms dedicated servers for Marathon, which is a welcome change for gamers familiar with Destiny 2’s peer-to-peer connectivity. He further assures gamers that Bungie is implementing vigorous anti-cheat measures.
MARATHON JOINS THE GROWING COMMUNITY OF EXTRACTION SHOOTERS
There seems to be a growing trend among shooter fans of playing extraction shooters. Bungie’s entry into the market puts Marathon alongside other popular extraction games like ‘Escape from Tarkov’ and ‘Call of Duty: Warzone’s DMZ mode.
BUNGIE PROMISES GAMEPLAY IN THE NEAR FUTURE
As of now, the game’s release date is not yet known, but Marathon’s general manager, Scott Taylor, says, “The next time you hear from us about Marathon, we’ll be able to show you the gameplay and will be much closer to launch.”
