Microsoft has decided to step down from its role as an observer on the board of OpenAI, less than eight months after initially securing a non-voting seat. Meanwhile, Apple had plans to join OpenAI’s nonprofit board, but recent reports indicate that this will no longer be happening.

OpenAI has confirmed Microsoft’s withdrawal from the board in a statement to The Verge, following reports from Axios and the Financial Times detailing that Microsoft’s deputy general counsel, Keith Dolliver, sent a letter to OpenAI indicating this decision.
